Under 7's at Principality Stadium

A festival of grassroots rugby saw young players from Bridgend Sports, Dulais Valley, RTB Ebbw Vale, Treherbert and Wrexham invited to the stadium to take part in a day of rugby activities and games.

The under-7s teams from across Wales were selected for their commitment to the development of rugby both on and off the field.

Supported by their family and friends, the stadium was a fusion of colour and excitement with a variety of rugby kits, scrum caps, Welsh flags and daffodil costumes.

Like hundreds of other rugby legends, the youngsters had the opportunity to run through the infamous tunnel before stepping out onto the pitch.

The aspiring rugby stars then took part in skills sessions and games which were delivered by a group of young WRU apprentices.

Hannah Poulton, head of multichannel communications at Principality, said: “We’re all really excited about the festival. It’s great to be able to give kids an opportunity like this – it’s a money can’t buy chance for many of them.

The session was the first time the WRU Coach Core Apprentices, a group of 18-23 year olds training to become rugby development officers, were able to coach on the pitch.

Carl Scales, head of apprenticeships at the WRU, said: “The great thing about this is that these youngsters are the next generation of players and the apprentices are the next generation of coaches. It’s a fresh start for rugby and for the stadium.

“As well as being the first to play on the pitch the kids also had the opportunity of changing in the National team’s changing rooms. When I was back there lacing up all their boots they were practically climbing the walls with excitement.

“The skills the children are learning are invaluable. It’s all about working together and as part of a team. Each child will have the opportunity to pass, catch and score a try.
